Cold Start Check Out These Small Gray Car Fans Losing It

The Glas Isar is interesting; it was originally thought of as a bigger, more upmarket Goggomobil, but then was rebranded the Glas Isar, which for some reason the company thought would sound weird in some non-Germanic markets, so they also sold is as the “Isard,” which they somehow thought was better? It’s got a little air-cooled 700cc flat-twin under the hood, too. Charming little guy. And the guy in the black suit absolutely has a boner....

Cold Start One Of The Coolest Cars Named For A Rock

Dolomite is a mineral! I mean, the name sounds like some kind of mineral, but it’s an anhydrous carbonate mineral, and no, I’m not a geologist, but I can Google like one, so I can tell you it’s composed of calcium magnesium carbonate, CaMg(CO3)2 and all I have to add to that is VW Beetle/Type I crankcases were made of magnesium. The name also refers to a sedentary carbonate rock, which can be produced from limestone in a process known as, shockingly, dolomitization, which happens when magnesium ions replace calcium ions, like I’m sure you’ve seen happen in your own homes....

The LA Auto Show runs from today, November 18th all the way through Sunday, November 27th. The Autopian’s goal is to have at least a couple of writers in our space every day that isn’t Thanksgiving (though the show is open [Editor’s Note: I will be there, possibly rebuilding an engine. Come help! -DT]). We’re in the Galpin Hall of Customs along with some extremely great cars. If you’ve never been to the LA Auto Show, you should know that it’s split into three sections, with the South Hall on the left (in this photo) and the West Hall on the right....

Here S All The Good Stuff The Autopian S New Commenting System Will Offer

THE GOOD The site is way faster! Memberful, our new system, is a lot leaner than what we used to use. Average load time is now 50% of what it was just a couple of weeks ago. The system is more resistant to spammers and we can more easily ban them from the site so they don’t keep popping up. It’s not perfect, but it’s much better. We still have moderation on just in case someone sneaks through so you may see your comment end up in moderation....

Here S How China Builds The Cheapest Cars In The World Like The Changli

In China, a vehicle like this is generally categorized as a Low Speed Electric Vehicle (LSEV). As the name implies, this category only covers electric cars. But the LSEV sector originates from gas powered vehicles of the same size and kind. Originally, these vehicles were intended for the elderly, those with disabilities, and for local business in smaller cities and villages. Electrification Brought A Boom In LSEVs The sector was ridiculed quite a lot in China for poor quality, ancient technology, and weird looks....

Here S Why The Bmw Multi Trailer Is The Coolest Accessory You Ve Never Heard Of

So what exactly is the Multi-Trailer? Well, it’s a sleek flatbed trailer offered through BMW dealerships around the turn of the 21st century. Manufactured by Westfalia, the trailer incorporates bespoke tail lights that tie in nicely with BMW’s ‘90s styling language and has a nice handy slot for storing optional loading ramps below deck. Simply drop the number plate panel, slide the ramps in, and you’re on your way. The Multi-Trailer’s brakes are simple drums, although a 5x120mm bolt pattern allows for fitment of popular OEM BMW wheels....

Holy Grails The First Generation Chevy Cruze Is Arguably One Of Gm S Most Important Cars

Last week, reader James got us all hot and bothered with the closest thing to a legitimate BMW M7. BMW South Africa took the already fast BMW 745i and made it even faster by shoving in the engine from an M5. And the reason was just as silly as the swap. The turbo of the regular 745i took up the space needed for the steering shaft in the right-hand-drive version....

How A Corvette Ls3 V8 Turns The Already Sketchy Land Rover Defender Into A Lovable Monster

Anyone who has ever driven a Land Rover Defender on dry pavement would likely offer you a cold compress and a place to lie down if you told them that what you thought the Defender needed was lots, lots more power, because there’s clearly something very wrong with you. I’ve driven a stock, 120 hp Defender 110, the long wheelbase one, in Iceland, and while it was fantastic off-road and going through ice and snow, on pavement it was about as graceful and nimble as a rhino on roller skates with one of those vibrating pager things from restaurants like Chili’s shoved up its ass....

That Viral Tweet About Truck Bed Sizes Over The Years Is Just Stupid

Here’s the tweet about this I saw first, coming from a Twitter account named “FuckCars,” which might be valuable context to keep in mind: — FuckCars (@FuckCarsReddit) January 29, 2023 At most recent count, that tweet has been seen 11.3 million times, which is a lot of times for anything to have been seen by anyone. The Eighth Gen Mercury Cougar Is A Charming Car That Is Vanishing From Our Roads

Yes, that Cougar. I bet the last time you can remember seeing one your life was in a very, very different place, because these are almost extinct and have been for quite some time. They’re pretty much all on Ghost Car status now, which is, I think, a shame, and we’ll get into why. The eighth (that word never looks right to me, by the way. I mean, over 66% of that word is “ghth” which reads like the sound you make when you walk crotch-first into a fire hydrant....

The Gorgeous New Electric Dodge Charger Daytona Srt Concept Comes With An Exhaust System And A Transmission

Dodge is in a bit of a pickle. The brand has built its name, in part, on raucously loud, powerful internal combustion engines, and now has to pivot to electric propulsion like the rest of the industry. Many of the brand’s customers are EV skeptics, believing that the only proper engine for a motor car is the V8. I don’t fault them for this; V8s are great. (And, to be fair, many people outside of Dodge’s customer base are are EV skeptics)....

The Humongous Campsite At The 650 000 Person Oshkosh Air Show Was Almost As Fun As The Show Itself

When I departed my home a week ago I had no idea what to expect. The campground attached to AirVenture, Camp Scholler, has a website that details the grounds and the facility, but it won’t prepare you for what you’ll experience. When I packed up my fiancé Sheryl’s Prius I pictured something like a regular campground; if you’ve gone RVing before then you know what I’m talking about. A typical campground will have neat gravel spaces for large RVs to park and manicured lawns for tent campers to set their stakes down in....

The Incredibly Strange Pirelli Bs3 Tire Featured Removable Tread You Could Change Yourself

Wait a second, what about the BS1 and BS2? Well, they didn’t really exist. The letters in the BS3 alphanumeric stand for battistrada separata, or separate tread, and the 3 stood for the three tread bands. Here’s how the BS3 worked: Tread bands were available in both summer and winter tread patterns and could be slipped on simply by deflating the tire casing. Once the pressure was pumped back up, grooves and air pressure would work to hold the bands to the tire carcass....

The Last Boeing 747 Has Been Built After An Incredible Production Run Of Over 54 Years

Back in April, I wrote about how Boeing was cracking through its final five orders of its famed 747. The very last 747 that UPS will get rolled out of the paint shop. And the final aircraft in the order book were for Atlas Air. We’ve all known that this day would come, but it’s still a bit of a shock. The Everett plant, the world’s largest building by volume, will no longer build the aircraft that it was constructed for....
