As perhaps some of you are aware, I spend a lot of my time in junkyards. I’d say I visit a ‘yard, on average, twice a week. Has it contributed to a rather suboptimal social life? You could make that argument; but you can’t make the argument that I don’t score smokin’ hot deals on car parts. Because I do. Anyway, this junkyard-wrenching has forced me to have a “bugout bag” ready — a collection of only the most essential tools that can accomplish the vast majority of the wrenching I need to do, but that doesn’t weigh so much that I’ll pull a muscle on my way from my truck to the junkyard wheelbarrow....

The DeLorean Motor Company of Texas has collaborated with famed Italian design house Italdesign on a future electric vehicle called the Alpha 5. It’s claimed to do the 0-60 mph dash in 2.99 seconds (reaching much?) and have a range of more than 300 miles from a 100 kWh battery pack. Not bad. However, it does look a bit weird, for reasons I’m about to show you. Yes, those enormous gullwing doors are portals to four seats, basically the philosophy of the DMC-24 that never went into production....

I’m currently in the process of slowly building the ultimate budget overlanding Jeep using a $350 Jeep Grand Cherokee as a starting point. At some point in the next five years I hope to drive from wherever I’m living in the U.S. all the way to the southern tip of Argentina in what will be at least a six month-long adventure. I figure I’m single, have very few obligations to others, and can wrench — if I’m ever going to do a ’round-the-world trip, I should do it sometime soon-ish....

Let’s start with the big number. No, I’m not talking about the extra horsepower on tap, although that’s all well and good. I’m talking about the 240 pounds BMW claims it’s removed over the M4 Competition. That’s an impressive figure, although it’s worth noting that BMW quotes a base six-speed manual M4’s weight as 3,830 pounds, some 50 pounds less than the Competition car. Still, 240 pounds is a fairly massive number, so where did it all come out of?...

The story of the L-1011 takes us back to the 1960s. In the prior decade, the introduction of the jet airliner had revolutionized commercial travel. The graceful de Havilland Comet was first, and was soon followed by a bunch of competition from all over. Travelers were captivated by jets, which made the world feel a little smaller. Jump to the 1960s, and airlines were looking to expand, with the goal of flying more people on larger metal birds....
